First, it goes straight over the existing surface, so there is no strip-out, no skip and less disruption. Second, it has no grout lines to discolour or scrub, and it wraps floors, walls and shower areas in one continuous finish.
Against premium large-format tiles or natural stone, microcement is often competitive once the removal and grouting of the old surface is priced in. It also sits close to terrazzo, another poured decorative finish, though the two suit different looks. Terrazzo gives a speckled aggregate surface, while microcement gives a smooth, mottled one.
How VAT Affects a Microcement Quote
Supply-and-install microcement from a contractor is a building and finishing service, so it usually falls under the reduced 13.5 per cent VAT rate rather than the 23 per cent standard rate. Because microcement is labour-heavy, the materials rarely make up enough of the price to change that.
Supply-only is different. Buying the microcement kit on its own is a supply of goods and carries 23 per cent VAT, which is one reason a trade kit at around €35 per square metre and a finished installation are not the same comparison. When you compare quotes, check whether the price includes VAT and whether it is supply-only or fully installed.
Is Microcement Worth the Cost
For the right project, microcement earns its price. It adds a modern, hard-wearing surface, removes grout maintenance, and avoids the mess and cost of tearing out what is already there.
